Nkuku Scallops Decorative Mango Wood Ball
These charming decorative balls have all been hand carved from mango wood. They look beautiful in our Mango Wood bowls and platters, and are a great way to add interest to an interior as well as offering something a little bit different. The mango wood we use is sustainable. Mango trees are initially grown for their fruit but once the trees reach a certain size and age, they stop bearing fruit. It is then that the trees can be cut down and used to create wood products. The removal of the old trees makes space for farmers to plant new mango trees. This not only means that none of the wood is wasted but offers a supplementary income to mango wood farmers. Mango wood is a hard wood that comes in many shades from light to dark. Size: approx 4.5" diameter
Thai Scorpion-Tailed Boat
I like model boats and ships, and have a very small collection. I found this model of a Thai Scorpion Tailed boat in a Ban Tiwai village shop, near Chiang Mai. The stinger-shaped stern post from which it derives it's name is visible behind the aft cabin. I'm not sure if it's teak or some other wood, perhaps mango (which is becoming popular for furniture, etc.). Scorpion Tail boats were ferries on the Mae Ping and Chao Praya rivers, between Chiang Mai and Bangkok and from shore to shore locally. They have a bamboo covered area to provide shade for passengers. What prompted the upload was when a friend posted a shot of a cleat to his Flickr pages, and the forms of the two seemed so similar to me.
Our first big shipment! Lots of packages to unwrap - feels like Christmas. Shown in the foreground is Trevor's new desk, replacing the wobbly folding metal card table - finally. The desk is one item in our line of mango wood furniture from India. Mango is one of the most environmentally friendly woods, because it's cut and replaced in existing fruit orchards when the trees stop producing mangos, and is not removed from natural forests. We will be offering a complete set of this mango furniture for the bedroom, dining room, and living room. We love the exotic detailing on the legs of this desk that reminds us of a Burmese temple chedi.
